Final renders taken in Autodesk Maya 2023.
A project for my 3D Animation class led by Professor Michael Edwards, in which we created a character from concept to model, added a rig, and animated it.
Looking back, this was a relatively rushed project due to my responsibilities for my senior capstone class/team being my main priority. I look forward to revisiting this project in the future to tweak my animations and improve upon what I started.
Modeling in Maya
Due to time constraints, I didn’t want to spend too much time on the modeling stage and create something with a high poly count. I knew what I would need for certain functionalities of the rig, including a mouth that could open/close and individual fingers, and I simplified everything else as much as I could. Texture created in Adobe Substance 3D Painter and cleaned up in Adobe Photoshop.
Creating the Controls
Rigging is typically the most challenging part of the pipeline for me, but I found it to be somewhat enjoyable in this project, as I kept it simple to limit the number of possible technical problems. While it’s certainly far from the perfect rig, it was perfect for my purposes.
Animating!
My favorite part of the process — breathing life into the character. I’m excited to come back to my animations at a later date and fine-tune what I have to further elevate them.
