Your Average Bear is a stealth comedy game featuring a black bear who steals food from a human campsite for his fellow forest critters.

Created remotely with a team of 28 students as part of the University of Utah Entertainment Arts and Engineering 2022-2023 Capstone Program. Made with Unreal Engine.

UI/UX

  • Designed graphical user interface elements in line with the overarching style of the game, including menus, buttons, and other various game elements

  • Worked closely with other artists to maintain stylistic consistency across assets

  • All graphics created using Procreate, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator, for use in Unreal Engine

Pause and Option menus/buttons

Designed to emulate a bulletin board with campground information, posters, and other notices.

“UBearEats” Phone Interface Quest Tracker

Allows the player to quickly check their quest progress and get hints, in the style of a messaging app.

Enemy Information Boards

The player can visit info boards located throughout the campsite to refresh their memory on the different types of enemies (and their respective abilities) that patrol the area.

Human Awareness Indicator

The player can see how much the humans at the Average Campsite acknowledge the bear’s presence through a handy meter floating above their heads. Although, they’re quite slow to notice the bear sometimes…

Credits

Also known as “Ranger Mike’s Secret Files,” the credits reveal classified information about the team that protects the Average Campsite from any mischievous bears that might dare to trespass.

3D Modeling

  • Created models/textures for two animal NPCs, Skunk and Squirrel

  • Modeled simple props for set dressing around the campsite

  • All models created in Maya 2022/2023 and textures created in Adobe Substance 3D Painter and Adobe Photoshop, for use in Unreal Engine

Skunk and Squirrel

Skunk is the player’s boss at UBearEats; he ensures that the player is equipped with all of the necessary tools and knowledge to be successful in the Average Forest.

Squirrel is one of the first clients that the player encounters, asking for a few granola bars to feed his addiction to human food.

Campsite Props

Miscellaneous props including water bottles, pots and pans, and a first aid kit that help bring life to the Average Campsite.


Animation

  • Created looping idle and greeting animations for all animal NPCs

  • Animated “scared run” and “angry walk” cycles for the human NPCs

  • All animations created in Maya 2023, for use in Unreal Engine

Animal NPCs

Each forest critter has their own looping idle animation, as well as a unique greeting animation that triggers when the player walks up to them.

The humans at the Average Campsite display a wide range of emotions when encountering the bear, including, but not limited to, anger and fear.

  • Designed and organized 150+ shirt orders

  • Printed, cut, and hand-pressed 300+ buttons and stickers

  • Managed social media accounts with consistent semi-weekly posting and audience engagement + outreach
